Body of slain Maoist leader Ajitha buried
Kozhikode: The body of Maoist leader P Ajitha, who was gunned down by the police inside the Nilambur forests on November 24, was buried on Saturday at the West Hill burial ground under strict police surveillance.
A large contingent of police personnel, including the bomb disposal squad was present near the burial ground. However, the assistant commissioner M P Premdas, who landed in controversy after he grabbed a relative of Kuppu Devaraj by the collar during the burial of latterʹs body, was not present.
The high court has asked the police to make the arrangements for the burial and to allow Ajithaʹs friends to pay last respects. Bhagat Singh, Ajithaʹs classmate at the Law College had approached the court to hand over the body to him as her relatives were not willing to receive the body.
The body was received by the police from Kozhikode Medical College authorities at 10am and was taken to the burial ground. Following the instructions from DSP (Tirur) A J Babu, the authorized police officer, the activists and friends of Ajitha stood in a queue to pay their last respects.
Social activist A Vasu and Bhagat Singh draped the body with red flag and gave red salute. The body was kept at the hall near the burial ground for one hour. Many people including Gandhian Thayatt Balan and RMPI leader K S Hariharan were present near the burial ground.
Addressing the impromptu meeting near the burial ground, Bhagat Singh said Ajitha had the chance to pursue a bright career in law, but she chose the life of struggle for the marginalized in the society. A Vasu, Bhagat Singh, Sabi Joseph, Thushar Nirmal Sarathy, P J Manuel, Shajil Kumar, C P Rasheed and others spoke.
